How To Be Unpopular At A National Park

Yes, that’s right.  Read this article, and you will know how to make yourself unpopular at a national park.  Admit it, there are days when you would like to be unpopular.  Maybe you sometimes feel misanthropic, like Mark Twain, or maybe you’re angry at the world and want to sequester yourself in a cabin like a right-wing, gun-toting survivalist.

Now, if you’re like most people, you want to avoid being unpopular at a national park.  After all, being unpopular could get you in trouble with other visitors or even park rangers.  So, the goal here is that by explaining what not to do, you’ll know what to do. This article describes five ways to make yourself unpopular at a national park.

1. Sleep in your truck bed along the main street near Zion National Park.  Attempting to save money by sleeping in your truck will attract suspicious attention from the police, other car drivers, and passersby.  This unpopularity will also cost you losses in comfort, safety, good sleep, and cleanliness. A better choice is to book a room at one of the many classy and comfortable hotels in Springdale, Utah, such as the Cliffrose Lodge and Gardens.

2. Smoke in areas not designated for smoking, like the hotel lobby or Zion Visitors Center.  This will surely make you unpopular and could draw arrest or a fine by law enforcement.

3. Wander off hiking trails in Zion Canyon so you can be adventurous and see more sights.  The problem here is that four million people visit Zion National park each year.  Imagine what would happen to the Park if only one-fourth of the visitors wandered off the trails.  It would cease to exist as it is and be closed to the public. The more people who leave marked trails, the more the natural habits for animals get destroyed, and the more people get lost and require expensive rescue efforts.  Hikers who leave marked trails also risk life and limb by invading areas of predatory residents, such as mountain lions, wolves, and bears.

4. When the day comes to embark on any of the many gorgeous hikes at Zion, dress inappropriately for weather or for other hikers.  Bikinis will make you unpopular, no matter what the weather. They will also expose you to more sunburn, scrapes, and rashes if you fall.  Too many clothes and insufficient water on a hot day can lead to dehydration and dangerous heat stroke. Making people rescue you in a national park does not make you popular.

5. Say smart-alecky things to people in the national park.  This goes for ethnic slurs, too. Sending a beginning hiker on a wild goose chase will not make you popular.  Making fun of tourists because of their races, belongings, food, speed while hiking, or clothing are also bad ideas.

6. Be loud and brash in any of the amazing restaurants of Springdale.  If you know you become obnoxious and rude when drinking alcohol, avoid it.  Public places require public behaviors. Please respect the right of everyone else to have a good time.
